Merely the outside of the Palais Garnier can take one's breath away, and the inside is just as impressive. In 1923 the building, including its architecture and the interior and exterior decorations, was classified a French national heritage site. The Palais Garnier was designed by the architect Charles Garnier and inaugurated in 1867. The unmistakable facade of this beautiful opera house gives the area its character, especially at night when the lights of the building illuminate everything around it. For fashion-oriented guests, the nearby Le Printemps and Galeries Lafayette department stores provide a French sophistication with a mix of international brands, and business guests will benefit from the proximity to the La Défense business district.The Opéra neighborhood takes its name from the celebrated Opéra Garnier, or Palais Garnier, that sits within the 9th arrondissement. The Louvre Museum, which holds the Mona Lisa and other famous works of art, and the Champs-Élysées, which is one of the most recognizable and fashionable avenues in the world, are just a couple of the nearby cultural sites. Initially named Hotel Terminus, it was built by architect Juste Lisch and designed to accommodate transatlantic travelers arriving from Normandy via the Saint-Lazare station. The landmark Hilton Paris Opera opened on May 7, 1889, during the World’s Fair in Paris.
